BEA pins loss on No. 11 JCC:
Jason Wilcox - Sentinel Sports Writer December 10, 2008 BLUE EARTH — The Jackson County Central Huskies may have walked away from Blue Earth Area High School on Saturday with the Dick Maher Invitational team trophy, but the Bucs had the last word in dual competition. Class A No. 8-ranked 215-pound Mat Willner scored an impressive fall in under a minute and No. 3-ranked heavyweight Jake Lee received a forfeit that clinched the Bucs’ 33-29 upset of Class A No. 11-ranked Jackson County Central in Blue Earth. The Bucs won the first two matches for a 12-0 lead before the Huskies (1-1) rattled off seven consecutive matches to claim a 26-12 lead. But Blue Earth Area won at 189, 215 and 285 to close out the team triumph, despite Jackson County Central winning more than half the matches. “We said bonus points would make the difference in this match. ... I thought we wrestled well, but we can get better,” said Buc head coach Randy Wirtjes. Trailing 29-18, Buc 189-pounder Taylor Andrews hit the mat against Jared Tirevold. The match was 5-3 after two frames, but Andrews’ 3-0 third-period performance gave Blue Earth Area three team points via the 8-3 decision. Willner then stepped to the mat and felled Collin Munoz in 36 seconds to reduce the Bucs’ deficit to 29-27. Lee then prepared for what would have been the clinching match, but the Huskies forfeited the final spot in the lineup and with it, the meet as BEA claimed the 33-29 win. Buc 103-pounder Travis Hagedorn set the early tone for the match, pulling off a fall in 5:58 over Kyle Edlin. “I thought Travis Hagedorn had a great comeback win for us,” said Wirtjes. Edlin held a 6-3 lead after two frames, but Hagedorn outscored Edlin 4-0 in the third period, his last points being a key takedown with 35 seconds to go that led to the late pin. Blue Earth Area’s 112-pounder Jake Wirtjes took less time to earn his six team points, pinning Dylan Riggle in 1:09. The Huskies then commenced their streak of seven wins in a row. Darick Vancura pinned D.J. Gronewold in 3:12 at 119, before Spencer Johnson claimed an 18-5 major decision over Jared Resutek at 125. No. 3-ranked Bronson Steuber claimed a major decision at 130 with a 16-7 win over Joe Franta, before Patrick Hanson’s escape with 1:54 left in the third frame proved the difference in a 3-2 win over Bryce Werner at 135. Tanner Menke secured an 8-4 win over the Bucs’ Collin Nienhaus at 140, before No. 7-ranked Taylor Menke notched an 11-5 triumph over Sinjin Bell at 145. The Huskies’ No. 8-ranked Cooper Moore rounded out his team’s winning streak with a 6-5 decision over Daniel Eckhardt at 152. Moore made a takedown with 40 seconds to seal the win and staked JCC to a 26-12 lead. The Bucs’ Tyler Johnsrud then pocketed a forfeit at 160, before JCC’s Jordan Phibbs earned the Huskies their last win, a 4-3 squeaker over Cody Eckhardt at 171. Blue Earth Area (2-0) competes in the Park Duals in Cottage Grove on Saturday. VARSITY RESULTS Blue Earth Area 33, Jackson Co. Central 29 103: Travis Hagedorn (BEA) dec.
