ST. PETER — Blue Earth Area may possess the higher wrestling ranking, but on Saturday it was Waseca who got the better of all their South Central Conference opponents.
The Bluejays finished with 217.5 points, while the Class A No. 9-ranked Bucs finished second with 204.5 points during the SCC Tournament in St. Peter.
The Bluejays led all squads with six individual champions, while St. James boasted four and Blue Earth Area tallied three. The host Saints had one champion.
St. James placed third with 195.5 points, while St. Peter had 158.5 points and Fairmont finished with 102. New Ulm was not allowed to compete in the championship round after an issue with the team’s weigh-in procedure.
The Bucs saved their best for last, winning championships at 215 and 285 pounds with their two ranked wrestlers, who now sport a combined 66-1 record.
First, No. 4-ranked Mat Willner (33-0) felled St. James’ Dylan Wright in 2:43, while holding a 13-1 lead after the first period.
The Bucs’ No. 3-ranked heavyweight, Jake Lee, had a bit of a tougher time with his championship round opponent in what proved to be the final match of the day.
Lee came up with a takedown 13 seconds into overtime for a 4-2 win over St. Peter’s Class AA No. 6-ranked Brandon Zabel.
“It was a good way to end (the tournament) for us, but we got worn out by Waseca and St. James the rest of the day,” said Buc head coach Randy Wirtjes.
The Bucs’ other title came at 152 pounds as Daniel Eckhardt scored a 3-1 decision over St. Peter’s Jim Wilkins.
The Bucs did place five other wrestlers in championship matches as Joe Franta (125), Carter Hanson (130), Bryce Werner (135), Cody Eckhardt (160) and Taylor Andrews (189) each pocketed second-place medals.
Travis Hagedorn (103), Jake Wirtjes (112), DJ Gronewald (119), Collin Nienhaus (140) and Sinjin Bell (145) each took third place medals for the Bucs.
The Fairmont Cardinals ended up with two wrestlers claiming third place in their brackets.
“We did about as well as we thought we would. ... Our older kids came in and wrestled well from 171 (pounds) and up,” said Cardinal head coach Bob Bonin.
Indeed as the Cardinals proved as potent in the upperweights as their Buc brethren with both Fairmont medals coming at 215 and 285.
Jose Velasquez ended up placing third at 215 pounds. Due to the elimination of New Ulm’s Class AA No. 2-ranked Pat Brinkman from the championship match, St. James’ Dylan Wright was moved into the title clash against Willner and Velasquez was awarded the third-place medal. Velasquez went 1-1 during his two seeding-round matches.
Heavyweight Scott Hines closed out the Cardinals’ day by finishing third at heavyweight as he pinned St. James’ Andre Brandts in 2:15 in the third-place tilt.
Fairmont faces Fulda/Murray County Central at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Section 3AA Team Meet in Worthington.
Blue Earth Area competes in the Section 2A Team Meet on Saturday in Janesville.
